puppyGet Involved

Volunteers play a critical role in the success of the MHS. Whatever your level of skill or experiences, we may have the perfect job for you.

Dog Walking

Our animals need to be socialized. They need play, and affection, and interaction. They need lots of love to counteract the stress of living in the shelter environment. Getting, or keeping animals socialized helps in the adoption process, and also helps with the trransition into a loving home. We have a beautiful 3 acre dog park just outside our door. Maybe you don't have space for that big dog you'd love to adopt...but you are welcome to sign up to be a dog walker. Just come in and get an application and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch with you about volunteering your time to benefit the dogs here at the shelter. Must be 18 to sign up for dog walking.

Foster Care

There are many times when animals with special needs come to us. They may need extra attention because of a medical condition, or they may just be too young to thrive in a shelter environment. To say that we care for every animal that passes through our door, is an understatement. We need help, and that is where foster families come into play. If you think you may be interested, please stop in and talk to us, ask questions, and see if it's something you can do. It means the world to us, and even more to the little lives you foster.

Thank you for taking an interest in our foster program.  This program was started with the purpose of placing animals that are temporarily unadoptable into short term homes where they can receive individualized care until they are able to be adopted.

What is foster care?
This program enables us to place unadoptable animals into short term homes. These animals are given temporary homes while they recover from illness, injury, and sometimes abandoned litters of pups or kittens that need to be nursed.

What sort of animals need to be fostered?
  • Puppies and kittens that are under 8 weeks old, and sometimes nursing mothers.
  • Sick or injured animals
  • Unsocialized animals

What are the requirements of foster care?

  • You will need to fill out a foster agreement application.
  • You must have adequate time and space to care for the animal.
  • All household pets must be current on vaccinations and healthy.
  • Monitor the animal and report any problems or changes to MHS.
  • Veterinary care cannot be sought without approval from MHS.
  • All animals must be returned to MHS as requested by management.

If you are interested in volunteering for our foster care program please visit the shelter and pick up an application.

Other ways to help....

Small Pet Housing:
Have room for a rabbit or guinea pig? Even a week's stay at your place lightens our work load.

Pet Transport:
Vet pick-up, breed rescue deliveries, or transport to groomers.

Gardeners:
Do you know the difference between a weed and a flower, do you have a trim tool? We have 5 acres of property that could use your botanical TLC. We'd love to hear from you!

Electricians:
Can you wire a socket, repair a ballast or replace a lightbulb?

Pet Groomers:
We need help! Many of our "residents" need a real beauty make-over. Got time in your schedule? Give us a call, we'll supply the shampoo!

Fundraising Events:
Throughout the year we have various events, and at times we could use the help of volunteers. Can you fold, stuff and label? It's easy work and is vital to our income and success.

Every little bit helps....

Come and learn about the MHS. We need each and every one of you to carry our message of kindness; to promote the benefit of spaying and neutering to reduce the surplus pet population and to encourage pet adoption from shelters. Our work is not possible without voluntary donations from the public. Get involved and help us to reduce the euthanasia of our pets. We love them but we need your help.

For more information on volunteer opportunities or fostering please call us at 219-872-4499 or email us.
