Surrendering An Animal

MHS receives animals from individuals who are no longer able to care for them, and animals that have been lost or abandoned. The animals that are available for adoption have been observed by staff and have passed evaluations that are necessary for placement. All adoptions must be done in person, as we do not take holds or do adoptions over the phone. We do not do same day adoptions. When you visit the shelter, you will be asked to complete an adoption form. This form is very important, and it is vital that you answer questions honestly. It is our goal to place animals in loving homes, with families that have the resources (stable living situation, income) to support them for a lifetime. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we do all we can to insure many happy years for you and your new pet!

Our adoption policy is as follows:

  • Visit our facility and see which of our animals match your lifestyle.
  • Fill out our adoption application for review by our adoption counselor.
  • Your application puts a 24 hour hold on the animal. Please call the next business day to check on the status of your application.
  • Once approved, you will need to fill out our adoption contract which reinforces your pledge to take proper care of the animal.
  • On discharge day, you must declare the pet's veterinarian. Continuing medical care is important for your new friend.
  • All pets 4 months or older must have an appointment scheduled for spay/neuter at the time of pickup.

Euthanasia Policy

The goal for each animal surrendered to MHS is to ensure them a high standard of care while they await placement in appropriate homes. MHS will not "rehome" pets deemed a danger to the community or those requiring extensive medical care. Life for animals in even the best of shelters can be stressful. Housing pets for an extended period of time can lead to personality changes such as aggression or severe depression. When all efforts have failed to ensure quality of life, euthanasia may be the only humane option available as deemed appropriate by our knowledgeable and compassionate staff.

Surrendering An Animal

We understand that sometimes there are valid reasons why a family or person cannot keep an animal, even though they may love it very much. Our surrender policy is below.

  • MHS works off of a waiting list, as we have limited space. To place your pet on our list please call the shelter.
  • We do ask for a 30.00 surrender fee to help with the care of the animal while it is with us.
  • You will be asked to fill out an owner release form and a pet information sheet so we can learn more about the animal, and it helps with placement as well.
  • MHS does not make calls to let you know how the animal is doing. You are welcome to call and check on the animal if you wish.
